I do hear you, but you’ve gotta realize that Japanese culture isn’t American culture. Japan has a big drinking culture. So many social interactions here, from professional to casual, happen around alcohol. And on the whole, at least from my perspective, women here aren’t as forward as they are in the US (there are exceptions of course). The just hanging back and “letting it come to you” approach doesn’t always work for people. I think it’s why there are a lot of isolated people in Japan who struggle in silence. And as far as getting to the gym goes… I think that’s another misconception. More muscles don’t necessarily equal more dates. I’ve always been in the gym - even back then. I think you’re making a judgement based on a talking head video. Even in this old video you’re seeing, I probably weighed somewhere between 210-220 pounds at 6’2”. I could easily bench press more than my body weight, squat even more, and I had a six pack. I do appreciate this comment, though. It makes for interesting discussion. Thanks.

@@TheJapanGuy I hear ya bro, but I forgot to mention that my wife of 35yrs is Japanese. I was stationed at Yokota 87-93. Culture... What is Culture? Just habits folks continue and call it Culture. It was in the Culture here in the US to lynch us. Just because they call it Culture doesn't mean you have to follow. Just get ya ass to the gym and work on you. Ms. Right will walk up one day and say Hi. 😁 😁 😁

I'm not sure how I feel about more true crime stories. While interesting, my general sense is that I wish there was a way to educate people about the negative effects our cultural values and behavior can have on our children without being flooded with images of violence. The information you share on Japanese language learning are full of insight and offer a lot. I'd rather see more stories of positivity than another video leading me to believe the future is filled with despair. That feeling aside, I wanted to comment that I liked the way you organized and edited the story. I'm sure it took time.

Im now curious how things were like before the tourist boom.

I think KiC is fantastic, but a major issue with the first edition is that the words appearing in the book aren’t the most common words in Japanese. It seems more geared towards academics or journalists. There are difficult words like “Article 9 of the constitution”, “exposure” (in photography) or “acoustics” - words that aren’t probably part of most people’s active vocabulary. Not sure if revised edition is any different. Even if it isn’t, it is still a good way to practice reading unknown words.

1:26, this is pretty much how I felt when I found out about the On/Kun reading. I had learned almost 200 kanji using 'Remember the Kanji' and my favorite Kanji apps (kanji senpai and another one) and was quite proud of myself for being able to write and recognize the meaning, but when I tried to apply it to reading them(with the proper sound) I became overwhelmed. I took a break....over a year ago....I'm just now getting up the nerve to try again.

Figuring out the best study methods for you is a whole process, so don't get discouraged! It's not just you! I found WaniKani really helpful for learning the readings. A lot of people say not to learn the readings out of context, but it was actually really effective.. I could see a word I'd never seen before and be able to guess accurately how its read more often than not. Made reading feel sooo much better. I took a break because after a certain point (around WK level 15), I was having a lot of trouble differentiating between similar looking kanji and wanted to incorporate writing practice into my studies, since I never really had issues with this when I was studying in college and was forced to write by hand all the time. Like you, I've recently started to feel up for giving it another shot. I'm starting with KKLC (designed specifically to prevent the problem I had) and handmade flashcards this time, but there are a few things I really miss about WaniKani. If you already feel confident in writing and recognition, it might be a good tool for you. Also has a very involved and dedicated community that creates a lot of cool tools for it. One of my favorite extensions was a font randomizer for your reviews.. helps a lot with being able to read different fonts and handwriting styles.

Interesting, i lived in Sendai, Japan 2008 when this happened.
